During our recent visit to Amsterdam, Netherlands, we visited The Hague. While walking the grounds outside the Peace Palace, which is home to the International Court of Justice, we saw this beautiful World Peace Flame Monument. In this time of world unrest, it was a moving moment to stand in this special place and reflect on the idea of peace enveloping all of us.
Stone Translation: The World Peace Flame – In July 1999 seven flames from five continents were united to create the World Peace Flame. The World Peace Pathway – 196 nations joined together in cooperation and solidarity to create the World Peace Pathway. Opened 27 April 2004. Please add your prayer for peace as you walk around. www.worldpeaceflame.com

I’m so sorry, I’ve been taking care of my very sick (for five weeks, it’s a long story, trying to figure out what’s wrong) ten year old and I missed that you were going to Amsterdam. If I could visit one place in the world, it would be Amsterdam. I have to get to the Anne Frank House, in fact my sixteen year old and I are saving and planning in hopes of going together in two years when she graduates. It looks like you were there for the tulips!! Hope you keep posting pics. Did you visit the Anne Frank house by chance?

Here’s hoping that special ten year old is feeling much better by now. 🙂 You caught me on one of the very few side trips I didn’t take. 😦 My fellow travelers enjoyed it very much and the one comment they consistently made was how steep the stairs were. 🙂 I would recommend to anyone that they put Amsterdam on their bucket list of trips to take. It is a beautiful country, the people are very friendly, and who doesn’t love canals, thousands of house boats, fields of tulips, gorgeous architecture, and thousands of bicycles. We loved it.

What a beautiful place! Reflecting on peace has so much value in this day and age, when there are young adults who in the U.S. who have never lived in a country that was not at war.

The World Peace Flame is beautiful. I imagine millions of prayers have been offered at that site. A comforting sentiment in this crazy, violent world we live in now.
