J. C. Nichols Memorial Fountain, 47th and J. C. Nichols Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri, at the east entrance to the Country Club Plaza includes four horsemen which are said to represent the four rivers of the world: the Mississippi River (the Indian riding the horse and beating off an alligator), the Volga River (with the bear), the Seine and the Rhine, all sculpted by Henri Greber in 1910 and installed here in 1958.

That’s a lovely fountain, Judy. I zoomed in, but I’m still trying to figure out what the little things are that the water sprays from on the perimeter.

Good question. The little things are fish and the water is spraying out of their mouth. 🙂

Interesting fountain! I’m not sure I would’ve picked those particular rivers as the four rivers of the world. What about the Nile and the Amazon? Do you know any background on that choice? Now I’m all curious . . .

I just looked it up for Joyce. It has to do with the fur trade in MO and the fact that he loved traveling to Seville, Spain. 🙂

I think this oasis achieved its goal of bringing a little circle of peace to the midst of a bustling big city! The choice of rivers to acknowledge is curious to me, though! This is the heart of America, I’d expect a tribute to the breadbasket of the country!

It is interesting and history tells us that it was based upon the old MO fur trading days and his travels to Europe and Seville, Spain. If you can imagine the Country Club Plaza spreads over fifteen blocks, and it is entirely lit with Christmas lights from Thanksgiving Eve until the middle of January. It is a spectacle to behold. 🙂

Lovely fountain, if somewhat Eurocentric.
