I grew up walking to the theatre every Saturday or Sunday. I’d meet friends or go alone because I could do that safely in those years.
I don’t go to the movies as much any more. I know they’ll be available in another media in a few months, can avoid the crowds, and paying $15 a ticket, and $7 for popcorn.
But Monday, three friends and I took ourselves off to lunch and then a movie – I Can Only Imagine.
I had no expectations except knowing it was based on a true story and Dennis Quaid had a supporting role. I didn’t recognize J. Michael Finley, Bart Millard, or the musical group, Mercy Me.
For 110 minutes, I sat there absorbing the message and the music. Yes, it is a story of faith, but it is not preachy or focusing on a certain religion. It does address the gritty issue of domestic abuse and uncontrollable anger in a very real way. And, woven through the story is music that you feel in your soul.
I can’t remember the last time I felt strong enough to put a movie out to everyone, but I’m going to do it this time. Christian or non-Christian, this is a story of people conquering their inner most fears to forgive those who have harmed them physically and mentally and becoming better human beings.
The theatre was packed, the movie ended, and not a soul moved. The credits rolled including an update on the real life characters while the beautiful title song played. Still, no one moved. Then the applause broke out and rippled throughout the theatre.
It was an experience I won’t likely forget. If you choose to see I Can Only Imagine, please let me know what you think about it.
Have a wonderful Wednesday.
If you’re in the path of that Nor’easter, may it be the very last one and stay safe. If you have an opportunity today to speak directly with Mother Nature, do us all a favor, ask her to kick winter to the curb. π
I only just heard about this movie on Monday and it piqued my interest. With your review, Judy, I think I’m going to go check it out. Thanks!

After we saw the movie, I looked up the reviews and comments and was amazed at the positive vibe on line. π

Being pulled into a story is an amazing experience, and, if it’s a story that touches our hearts, that’s even more than amazing. It sounds as though everyone in that theater was affected by the power of that story. Thanks for telling us. As for the Nor’easter, it’s a white, white world in Indiana this morning. Certainly we are not as threatened as folks on the east coast, but still it was prettier in December. I will CERTAINLY have a word with Mother Nature as soon as I can find her.

Yes, snow is beautiful in December, and we can’t wait for it to stop in March. Thank heavens you are on the trail to get this wicked winter stopped otherwise I fear for April forecasts. π

I know the song well and have heard excellent things about the movie. Glad you concur. I’m going to have to look for it here.

Being in a theater for a movie like that is a special experience. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review. It’s a movie I would likely pass up, but if I have the chance, I’ll give it a watch.
We’ve beaten this storm into a small pain. Although it may hit the MASS Pike during the evening rush hour. Hopefully, I will be home, watching it snow through the window, and taking her majesty out.

Her majesty will appreciate the effort. If she ever sees the volume of fans she has, she will be even harder to live with. π

I think she knows. We joke about it.

Clif and I each have something called Movie Pass. It’s a subscription plan, and for ten dollars each per month, we are allowed to go to one movie per day at the cinema, as long as it’s not 3D. You need to have a smartphone and download the app. Then Movie Pass sends a debit card, and when a particular movie is chosen through the app, that price is downloaded onto the card, which is then presented to the person at the box office. How long this will last, I do not know, but we are taking advantage of it as long as it does. In our area, at least, Movie Pass is sure increasing attendance at the various cinemas. As for Mother Nature…she always has her way in the end, doesn’t she? π

I had read on your blog about Movie Pass but didn’t really understand it. Thank you for the explanation. I’ll have to check it out, and I’m sure others will too. Keep the green machine at the ready today. π

we love the song, there was a young man in our church, Kevin who has the voice of an angel, when this song first came out, he sang it in church service and there was no one in the church that did not have tears… hopefully they will put the movie on TV, we don’t go to theaters. it does my heart good to hear that people applauded this movie…

Everyone has a different path in life that they have traveled, but the take away here for me was forgiving so you can be a better person. π Here’s hoping it comes to Redbox or Netflix, and you can check it out.

What an incredible experience that had to be. And so totally unexpected. I don’t go to the movies any more so it would be nice if it shows up on TV. So glad you and your friends had the opportunity to share this experience .
I would love the opportunity to speak with Mother Nature……but it won’t be a friendly conversation! Lol.

It might not be termed friendly, but I bet get she’d get the message loud and clear and move winter up and out. π

It is wonderful to hear about a film that is about something other than killer robots or serial killers. Because of that, we only see about two movies a year.

It is pretty obvious when you watch the previews or trailers on TV, they definitely aren’t marketing to the over 60 crowd. I like a good action movie, and I read tons of mysteries. This was more ‘real’ life, and it did cause me to think and reflect. π

I haven’t been to a movie in …oh maybe a decade. I’ve heard good things about this movie, and your review puts it at the top of my list to look for when it hits Netflix.
Mother Nature always seems to go out like a Lion doesn’t she? It’s raining here, but I won’t complain we need it, and it makes our mountains so lush and green. I am happy every time I go out and see so much green! π

Thank you for a great review – just enough to pique one’s interest without giving too much away. I’m going to check into this one. We kind of phased out of going to movies for the reasons you sited as well as seeing too many in a row that just confused me or were too violent. This one sounds like a “thinking person’s experience” – the kind I’d enjoy!

I’m pretty positive you’d enjoy this one, but do take a tissue or two. π

Yes, I know all about Mother Nature today. Stuck at home, bored with this wintry stuff. I’ve heard of the movie you saw, and it sounds interesting to me. Like you we rarely to to movies because of the price, but maybe I could make an exception.

We went to a matinee which was a little cheaper. I can say I certainly got my money’s worth on the ticket. I passed on the popcorn. π

I’ll keep an eye out for it. We just caught “The Shape of Water,” which turned out to be pretty good, but also … kind of creepy. It all depends on how you feel about the monster from the blue lagoon.

I wasn’t familiar with that title, but I looked it up. Good actors, but the story does look just a teeny bit creepy. π

Thanks Judy that sounds like an uplifting movie…. Before I retired I taught some difficult kids & many of them had been exposed to far too much violence & anger … So I’d be interested in the movie.

Everyone’s childhood is not what dreams are made of, and this movie is somewhat of a look inside to see that. This family made an opportunity to correct things which I know everyone doesn’t have. Good movie.

I haven’t heard of it. I’ll keep an eye out for it here. Going to the cinema here starts at $18 but we can get $12 tickets through our phone plan. Bargain!
