Oh, no! From experience, I know that hurts like a son of a gun.

Everything you read says ‘stand still’ when they attack. I wonder if they’ve ever been bit by those suckers. You just can’t stand there, plus you’ve got to get them off. 🙂

That’s for sure. I always run like crazy when they attack. One time I even whipped off my shirt outside before I reached the house. And I didn’t care a jot who saw me. 😉

Nasty hornet I think. Ouch!!!

Yes. Last year, I had the yellow jackets in the ground, and this year it’s the hornets hanging from a tree right over two beds. 🙂

I’m allergic. Keep those away from me.

You know, I’ve been thinking about that this summer. I get bit, it stings, it swells, it itches, but apparently that is it after one Benadryl and an ice pack. Here’s hoping I’m taking the hits so you don’t have to. 🙂

I clicked like, but only for the first pretty photo. Not for the ouchie ending to this story. Oh my, perhaps the Garden Gods are telling you to take a break.

I’m sitting here laughing because I’ve had the same thought especially this morning when I lifted the lid on the propane tank to check how much we had and a entire nest of them flew up in my face. Thankfully, they didn’t sting me this time and retreated to protect their nest, but they sure got my attention and they sure heard a few swear words from me. This nest was a very small one, and with a good shot of spray I took them out and could get rid of the nest. But, I’m sure sick of these guys being at every corner I turn. 🙂

Oh no, Judy! I’m sorry you were stung. But how well disguised that nest is, and how really beautiful the entire structure is – with everybody knowing what to do and where to go. Nature at its finest – although that’s not always good for us!
Hope you’re feeling better now!

Doing fine. 🙂 Yes, it truly is a masterpiece when you think how they all work together to create it. When I was looking up info on how to get rid of them, I was shocked to see people were selling them on Ebay. Who knew there was a market for hornets’ nests? Definitely not me. 🙂

The WORST sting ever. I run when I see bald-faced hornets!
Apparently, after the first frost they are gone – then you can sell the nest! 🙂

I admire the way you bring the viewer in, closer and closer, with your photos. You know, of course, for me that would happen only with photos; no way I’d go that close for real! But then to have them fly up in your face from that tank — yikes! I swear I jerked up when I read that! Those stings are horrible, and I’m sure hoping you’ve had the last of them. As for buying hornets’ nests on eBay, why bother? Just tune in to the news!

Well, now, you certainly have a point about the news. In an effort to maintain some semblance of my mental health, I avoid it whenever I can. 🙂

Oh no Judy, I remember you were stung badly by bees last year, and now the hornet’s nest! Once the weather cools down you could do your gardening in those bee suits (the ones that look like astronaut suits)..in the meanwhile, keep away from the nasties.

I must admit I never thought gardening might be hazardous to my health, but these guys certainly add a whole new dimension to checking my surroundings. 🙂

OH, NO! I’d risk getting stung for those cherries. I’m so sorry you got stung! I’ve only been stung once when I was 12 or 13…I had armpit hair. I got stung in the armpit. My mom couldn’t tell the stinger from the new growing hairs in my armpit! So, it had to stay in and work it’s own way out. I hated puberty even more that day.
I hope it was easier for you get the stinger out, and it didn’t sting long!

That hurt just reading about your experience. These suckers don’t have a stinger, but they keep stinging until you can get them off. I’m fine, but I’m just really sick of getting bit. We’ve got the hornets in the tree, yellow jackets in the boxwoods, and a huge mud dauber nest right under the nest box of the chicken coop. It’s like a war zone out there. 🙂

It was hard to hit like button on this comment!
Getting bit so many times as you have I’d be worried about developing an allergy to the venom. Bee suit, and smoker is what I’d ask Santa for.
I’m glad you’re aright!
Did you do something with the cherries besides eat them right off the tree?

I truly wish they were cherries, but it is an ornamental apple tree. The robins in the spring devour every one of them. I love cherries. 🙂
