Garage doors. There’s normally nothing too fancy about them. The story is usually what’s behind them.
Does your pulse quicken at the sight of four plus garage bays and a space above? Mine does. Cars plus room for diy projects, potting bench, crafts, woodwork, paint, outdoor sink- oh, the options are endless.
This particular four-car garage is part of the Weeks estate in Lancaster, New Hampshire, that was built in the early 1900’s by John Wingate Weeks, Congressman, Senator, United States Secretary of War, and leading conservationist.
When built, this garage housed the Weeks’ Cadillacs and provided lodging above for the chauffeur.
In 1941, the estate covering Β 446 acres was given to the state of NH to be used as a state park. Today, it provides visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of the White Mountains of NH, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the upper Connecticut River Valley.
It’s a sight to behold so my friend, Sue, told me when she texted me this photo. It’s good to have friends especially on Thursday. π
Like doors? Go visit my other friends over at Norm Frampton’s

I dream of structures like this, Judy. If I had such a garage, you can bet Iβd have doors like this on it. Thanks (and thanks to Sue) for sharing this.

The construction and trim of those doors is quite unique isn’t it. They would definitely catch your eye.

Yes my pulse quickened and I gasped in delight when I saw your photo. The doors, the colors, the roofline. What a delightful building. It’s just filled with memories, don’t you suppose?

I thought about the chauffeur(s) living above there whose job it was to take great care of those Cadillacs. He sure had great views. π

Mr ET would love to have a building this size in which to do all his manly things, like motor bike restoration. He often has serious shed envy.

Exactly – I understand shed/garage envy. π

He is afflicted with it. If he had his way, we would sell this home, which has a medium shed, just to buy a home with a giant shed. I love my home, so he would have to find something extra special to tempt me away. π And if the giant shed came with a bathroom, I would never see him again.

Yes, my pulse quickened and I thought “weaving studio!!” And space for a quilting frame! And cats sleeping in the sun streaming thru those windows. Sigh . . .

I share your excitement. My space would be full of papier mache dinosaurs. I’d have an annual “Dino Day” for the grandkids and drag ’em all out for an after dark, flashlight-lit hunt through the woods. I’d have grandpa dressed up as a t-rex to jump out and scare the heck outta ’em!
No longer would I have the dilemma of building an animal inside my house, only to find out it had to be dismembered in order to leave!

For you, we would add those garage ceiling storage lifts. You could create on the floor, and then lift them right up for storage so you could start on the next project. π

Wonderful! Also, nice to read it’s part of a state park. Love Joyce’s comment! How those grandchildren would scream, but all in good fun.

I could see you having an area dedicated to writing up above, and Little Green would certainly have plenty of space downstairs. π

Fabulous doors……fabulous building. We would live happily upstairs and we’d share the space downstairs for woodworking and painting projects. The car can just sit outside!!
Thanks to your friend Sue for sending you this photo. What a treasure!

Oh Judy, you think like I do. I’ve always wanted an outbuilding to have a private creative space. One like this would be outstanding!! If it came with a chauffeur that would be even better π

That’s right – forget retaking our driver’s license test at a certain age, forget taxis, forget ubers, just bring on the chauffeur just waiting for our next destination. He could load and unload your bike and kayak. Love it. π

It reminds me of what I think they called the “mews,” where the chauffeur lived on the original Upstairs Downstairs. π – Marty

It’s kind of hard to even imagine calling someone to pull the car up when you want to leave, but it would be fun to give it a try. π

I never have any door pictures, but that’s maybe because houses are spread so far apart and doors rather hard to find! I love barn doors, even the decrepit ones.

Yes, it makes my soul hot, and my pulse quicken to see such a sight! I wish property taxes were not so high to force families out of such properties and land! Don’t even get me started on this topic!

Property taxes, now that is an entire new post threat that I bet everyone across the country could chime in on with their own personal horror story. We live in a state with no sales tax. Imagine what the property taxes are here. π

Now those are DOORS! What a building! You are so right about the mystique of the doors being the unknowns behind them. Judging by the comments here, I’d say you and Sue tapped into a real spirit of kindreds! This place seems to call to everyone here. A lovely post!
