As we enter the sixth month of living history here, it’s hard to avoid all the elephants in the room although I do give it my best shot.
I find myself watching less news, avoiding anyone who wants to talk politics, and refusing to get involved in a ‘heavy’ conversation – my mental status can’t take it. π
Do I care about the never ending list of issues affecting our country? Of course. Am I registered to vote? Yes, and I’ve requested an absentee ballot to stay away from the crowds.
My question today is whether or not the current situation has affected your social media usage.
I’m not whatΒ you’d call a ‘big’ social media user.
Recently, I decided to delete my Twitter account. A couple of clicks and poof I was done with that.
I use Facebook solely to stay in touch with friends or family who use it otherwise I’d delete it in as they say in a New York minute.
Instagram I like. It’s simple and mostly positive. A photo, a short comment, and we’re good.
YouTube to me is where I go when I want to find out how to do something related to DIY, and Podcasts are what I listen to if I can’t read.
According to the net, there are 75+ social media sites we need to be aware of in 2020.
I couldn’t care less. I still prefer interacting with people and want to spend less time online not more.
How about you, more or less time online? What’s your favorite social media site?
Happy first Monday in August, and I’ll be back on Thursday with a door. Who knew I could come up with another door?
This morning it’s off to the computer store for some advice because I have issues. When the battery is dropping so fast you can watch it, and it is running so hot you can’t rest your hands, technical help is needed.
The humidity is already 82% so I’m thinking the rest of the day I’ll be inside. Isolation and wicked hot and humid weather aren’t a good combination, but it is what it is. π
Iβm pretty happy with my life, populated with family, but also worn down by the world outside my home: the nasty politics, virus worry, inability to compromise across the congressional aisle…..Have stopped looking at cable news all day and just skim past it on Facebook. Bright spots for me online are your blog and one other I follow, plus what my daughters post with the kids on Facebook. Thatβs enough

Agreed on limiting βnewsβ or I would go crazy. FB for friends and no arguing. YouTube for music – choral, baroque, Bach cantatas, Vosces8, Sacred Harp… Too hot and humid to linger or work outside, but abundant blooms to enjoy – and cut almost daily so Marian gets to enjoy them indoors. Still no visiting or gathering. A long isolation, and a little stir crazy at times. A low level depression all around. Stopped expecting things to get better any time soon. Expecting school/college issues to overwhelm us after Labor Day. Indeed βit is what it isβ but I need to face it with a more positive attitude. βLord, have mercy!β

Music on YouTube – I haven’t tried that, so thank you. Yes, to cutting blooms for Marian to enjoy ‘inside.’ Hideously hot and humid out there today. I’m also glad to know I’m not alone when it comes to getting a little stir crazy at times from all this isolation. As you can imagine, Durham is going through all kinds of issues with the students starting to roll back into town. They’re meeting tonight to decide on requiring mandatory wearing of face coverings. I must admit I’m glad I’m one town away and will keep my distance. Stay well. π

I am primarily involved with Twitter and Facebook, but both on a narrow basis. I tweet/retweet stuff that strikes me as funny or interesting, but I try to avoid any hint of politics or current events. It’s not that I don’t care, but I don’t see how my participation will help. On Facebook, I mainly keep up with friends. I avoid the traps some of them put out there. I joined Instagram, but I’ve yet to post a photo. I look at others and like them, but I’m not sure if I have the time to get more involved. 75 places we need to be aware of? That’s crazy.

Judy, I agree with you about Social Media. Does blogging count? Other than this blog, I only use FB and Instagram and YouTube occasionally. I would ditch FB if it wasn’t the best way to keep up with friends and family. Sometimes it’s the only way I find out someone I know has passed away. I rarely watch the news, and when a hurricane is coming I never look at the Weather Channel. It’s the National Hurricane Center website and one other blog that give me the best information to know whether to evacuate or stay put. Can you tell Isaias is on my mind today?

I suppose blogging falls under Social Media, but I consider it a separate entity. π Isn’t that funny when you think about how we find out someone has passed now – it’s posted on FB. I can imagine you have it all figured out where to find the best weather info, and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that this latest one that I can’t pronounce skips right around you but does leave some nice moisture in the non threatening form.

It certainly is what it is. Because of the humidity, couldn’t bring myself to peddle on the road to nowhere this morning. I’m pretty much where you are with social media, except I’ve never used Instagram. Perhaps someday. I do love podcasts, mainly from NPR but also from a few other places. Always listen when I’m doing chores, inside and out. Tuck my phone in my pocket, put in the earbuds, and off I go to other places and other stories. Sure broadens the horizons of this homebody.

Thank you for the chuckle because I love that reference ‘on the road to nowhere’ because I’ll probably end up walking on the treadmill today because of the heat. I was getting into gardening podcasts but I’ve tapered off. I have tinnitus, and when I’m outside there is enough noise from nature that I don’t notice it. I think I enjoy that break so much I don’t want to plug into music or talking. There is so much available right now on so many different avenues, it really could boggle your mind. Hope you aren’t as hot and humid as we are today.

I do agree with your sentiment very much, and politics today seems like the first circle of Hell, but this is a dangerous time to be complacent when our public policy is in the hands of banks and corporations set to make mind boggling amounts of money from health policies informed by eugenicists. Nobody is in a position to be able to understand all complexities of modern life, so we have to proxy our sense making to people we trust. Do you trust the media with their if-it-bleeds-it-leads business model? Do you trust the politicians to make hard decisions that aren’t predicated on their re-election chances? After watching our brave military being misused to overthrow any regime that won’t fall in line with the petro-dollar and causing deaths in the millions, destruction of infrastructure and social disruption with wars concocted on lies, and after watching the media and political classes condone the continuing the 50+ year wealth redistribution upwards, I refuse to disengage and therefore I have to visit social media to find new sources that I must assess and rely on to make sense of the world. But I love your doors!

You make some very valid points, and I agree with several of them. I guess my point is that we are deluged with information and sometimes I just want a little less noise. Do I look up issues from several sources if I do not fully understand, of course I do. But, there are days or topics when I feel like I just don’t want to hear or read one more word about it. Kind of like the notice to wash my hands – I got it, I do it, I won’t forget. π

I feel like I’m living in a foreign country. This isn’t anything like home. I also think that the horrors we are facing now are at least in part because we didn’t pay attention to what has been happening for most of our lives. This mess didn’t start in 2016, though it certainly got a lot worse. No, we’ve allowed the continued corruption of our government — of both parties — to continue. NAFTA was the worse trade deal ever made and I thought so at the time, even though I liked Clinton, I STILL thought it was a horrible idea and I was sure that sooner or later, we’d pay a big price for it.
I think we all contributed to this disaster in which we are living. And I am ashamed.
As for social media, I try to find things to be happy about, but I’m bummed. I also can’t write about feeling bummed all the time. It just makes me feel worse. So I write something about it intermittently and I reblog other people’s work. We can’t stay angry and miserable all the time or at least I can’t. Even if it’s just how beautiful the birds are on the feeders and how cute the little chipmunks are.

I do want to stay updated on what’s happening in the world, but without being inundated with talking points, rhetoric, propaganda, and worst of all: “experts” who’ll tell me what to think about it all.
I quit FB a few years ago and don’t miss it. I gave up on Instagram, and after a two-month complete break I’ve come back to Twitter for the people who make me laugh.
